Many of the pews are privately owned as part of a money raising venture to help pay for extensions and restorations. A few of the very plain pews at the back were reserved for poor parishioners and are marked as 'Free' on the pew doors. There are certain pews for the church cleaner and others for strangers to Whitby (marked 'For Strangers Only').
